A Midsummer Night's Challenge

A Midsummer Night's Challenge
host: A Chain of Letters
dates: June 1, 2008 - June 25th, 2008
books required: 2--one by Shakespeare

  1. Read A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare. Your copy from High School (if you still have it) is fine.

  2. Then read at least one other book/graphic novel connected to or based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream (possible works listed below).

  3. Blog about this supplementary work, comparing it to the original

I've read the Manga Shakespeare edition of A Midsummer's Night Dream. I will *probably* be using that. There are a few books in my tbr pile, however, that feature Titania and Oberon. I might read those if time permits. (Frewin Jones' Faerie Path series. #2 The Lost Queen and #3 The Sorcerer King.)

I've already read this series. But if you're looking for more books that would probably qualify (check with the host, first) then Michael Buckley's Sister Grimm series is fun. I don't think the first book features Puck. But most of the sequels feature Puck. He's one of the main characters in fact. And in one of the books, the fourth one I believe, they go to New York City and meet King Oberon and Queen Titania.

I did not participate in the first challenge. But I was excited to see it being offered again for this year. Beginning July 1, 2008, and ending July 1, 2009. The challenge is to read 13 books by or about Canadians. I'll be focusing on L.M. Montgomery. I don't know which thirteen. But I've included (for my own sanity) a list of all her works. I'd like to get to them all eventually. But probably won't have time to squeeze them all in. It's being hosted by John of The Book Mine Set.

A Fairy Tale Challenge

This challenge, I believe, is a perpetual challenge. It is being hosted by Judy of Intergalactic Bookworm. She has set up a challenge blog. The rules of this one are really simple. Make it a goal to read each of Andrew Lang's Color Fairy Books: Pink, Red, Crimson, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Lilac, Brown, and Grey. She's linked participants to the Project Gutenberg site where they are available to read online. They are also available to buy (at least some are) through Amazon and other such places. They're also available online here.

It's The End of The World Challenge

Name: It's The End of The World (As We Know It) Challenge
Host: Me, Becky (of Becky's Book Reviews)
Dates: May 2008 - September 15, 2008
Books Required: at least three

Read at least three books about "the end of the world." This includes both apocalyptic fiction and post-apocalyptic fiction. There is some overlap with dystopic fiction as well. The point being something--be it coming from within or without, natural or unnatural--has changed civilization, society, humanity to such a degree that it radically differs from "life as we know it." (Aliens, evil governments, war, plague, natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes, depletion of resources, genetic manipulation, etc.) Here is a wikipedia article on the subject. Also see here.

  • Books can be adult, young adult, or children's. (Though obviously, most will be YA on up.)
  • Graphic novels can count.
  • Audio books can count.
  • Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
  • Rereads can count. But try to read at least one new-to-you book.
  • Books read earlier in the year (January to April) can count in part for the challenge. (But not all three, please.)
  • No lists are required, but you may post one if you like. I'd be curious to see what people want to read...

To sign up, please leave a comment on this post.

To share your thoughts and reviews, I'll be posting a monthly update on the 15th of each month. (June 15, July 15, August 15, September 15). If (or should I say when) I forget to post that update--please email me (laney_po AT yahoo DOT com) and remind me!!! I would welcome the nudge :) Though give me the benefit of the doubt and wait until the afternoon! I don't get up early. And sometimes it's hard to post before ten or twelve.

Suggested reads:

The Host by Stephenie Meyer
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau (and sequels)
The Sky Inside by Clare Dunkle
Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
the dead and the gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer
Unwind by Neal Shusterman
the shadow series by Margaret Peterson Haddix
the uglies series by Scott Westerfeld
Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus by Orson Scott Card
Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank

Feel free to post suggestions in the comments as well if you like.

MotherReader's Big Announcement

MotherReader has announced plans for the THIRD ANNUAL 48 HOUR BOOK CHALLENGE. The challenge that asks you to give your all for 48 hours (during the weekend of June 6th through June 8th) in the hopes of besting the competition and winning a few prizes.

To sign up, you'll need to visit her blog and leave a comment. While you're there you're probably going to want to make a note of all the rules and guidelines.

  1. The weekend is June 6–8, 2008. Read and blog for any 48-hour period within the Friday-to-Monday-morning window. Start no sooner than 7:00 a.m. on Friday the sixth and end no later than 7:00 a.m. Monday. So, go from 7:00 p.m. Friday to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday... or maybe 7:00 a.m. Saturday to 7:00 a.m. Monday works better for you. But the 48 hours do need to be in a row.

  2. The books should be about fifth-grade level and up. Adult books are fine, especially if any adult book bloggers want to play. If you are generally a picture book blogger, consider this a good time to get caught up on all those wonderful books you’ve been hearing about. No graphic novels. I’m not trying to discriminate, I’m just trying to make sure that the number of books and page counts mean the same thing to everyone.
  3. For promotion/solidarity purposes, let your readers know when you are starting the challenge with a specific entry on that day. Write your final summary on Monday, and for one day, we’ll all be on the same page, so to speak.
  4. Your final summary needs to clearly include the number of books read, the approximate hours you spent reading/reviewing, and any other comments you want to make on the experience. It needs to be posted no later than noon on Monday, June 9th.
There are three other rules on her post. I'm just copying the ones relevant to me. That is the ones I'll need to refer back on when the big weekend comes.

It's time to start thinking strategy. Last year, my first twenty-four hours went great, but the second day I made some huge tactical errors when it came to book selection.

It's really too bad we can't do this challenge as a team. Imagine. A reading challenge like a relay race.

Maybe other challenge-holics can sympathize. I'm having the hardest time coming up with a list. There are simply too many books out there. Once Upon A Time II Challenge!!!

Carl is hosting his second Once Upon A Time Challenge. March 21rst through June 20th 2008.

The Journey

This is really as simple as the name implies and is to Once Upon a Time as the experience was to The Sci~Fi Experience. It means you are participating but not committing yourself to any specific number of books. All reading is a journey, perhaps none more so than reading fantastical fiction. By signing up for The Journey you are agreeing to at least read one book within the four categories during March 21st to June 20th period. Just one book. It has always been of utmost importance to me that the challenges that I host be all about experiencing enjoyable literature and sharing it with others. I want you to participate. Hence, The Journey.

Quest the First

Read at least 5 books that fit somewhere within the Once Upon a Time II criteria. They might all be fantasy, or folklore, or fairy tales, or mythology…or your five books might be a combination from the four genres.

Quest the Second

Read at least one book from each of the four categories. In this quest you will be reading 4 books total: one fantasy, one folklore, one fairy tale, and one mythology. This proved to be one of the more difficult quests last year merely because of the need to classify each read and determine which books fit into which category. I am not a stickler, fear not, but I was fascinated watching how folks worked to find books for each category.

Quest the Third

Fulfill the requirements for Quest the First or Quest the Second AND top it off with a June reading of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Love the story, love the films, love the idea of that magical night of the year and so this is my chance to promote the reading of this farcical love story.

I will be signing up to do Quest the First: 5 books from any/all categories. I'm committing to five. We'll see how it goes. My list will probably change as the weeks go by. Adding and subtracting at will.

The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan (May 6th Publication) (Hyperion)*
Nobody's Prize by Esther Friesner (April Publication) (Random House)

Sisters Grimm: Magic and Other Misdemeanors by Michael Buckley (Harry Abrams)
Sisters Grimm: Tales From the Hood (May 1 Publication) (Harry Abrams)
Out of the Wild by Sarah Beth Durst (June Publication) (Razorbill/Penguin)

Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George
A Curse Dark As Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce
Enchantment by Orson Scott Card

The Swan Kingdom by Zoe Marriott
The Swan Maiden by Heather Tomlinson
Ever by Gail Carson Levine
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Wings by E.D. Baker
Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley

For those looking for titles to add to their own list, I can't recommend the following highly enough:

Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
Nobody's Princess by Esther Friesner
Iris, Messenger by Sarah Deming
