Century of Viewing, week 27
1980s
- 1982 Ivanhoe. I love Anthony Andrews' Ivanhoe so much. This is by far my favorite adaptation. What should you expect? King Richard, Prince John, Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, villainous knights, damsels in distress, sword fights, jousts, and pointy hats. This period drama has it all. Highly recommended.
- 1986 Star Trek IV The Voyage Home. If this was a Friends episode it would be THE ONE WITH THE WHALES. This concludes the story begun in Star Trek II Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III The Search for Spock. The crew of the Enterprise--now without the actual Enterprise--finds themselves going back in time to the 1980s to get themselves whales to prevent the destruction of earth in the future.
- 1989 Star Trek V The Final Frontier. Should this movie exist? Probably not. It is so far from being 'good' yet I'm not sure that it will end up being the worst movie I've seen this year. It might be. It might not be. Anyway, what is it about??? The crew goes in search of God. Also Spock's half brother is evil.
1990s
- 1991 Star Trek VI Undiscovered Country The Friends title for this one would be THE ONE WITH A KLINGON PEACE TREATY. Maybe. I don't know for sure how to describe it. The Klingons are seeking peace...or are they? Starfleet is seeking peace....or are they? Kirk and Bones find themselves framed for murder and in an inhospitable prison...for a bit. Can they clear their names and save the peace council and prevent disaster?
- 1993 Benny and Joon. There are not enough words for how much I love this movie. I adore this romantic drama. Sam, Benny, Joon--love them all. I still think of this one as a love letter to Buster Keaton fans.
- 1993 12:01 This is a time loop movie. A man lives one day over and over and over again, but it's no joke. It's an action packed, thriller-day--the stuff of nightmares. The woman he's crushing on at work....is in danger...and the more he strives to save her life....the more his own life is in danger. Will they successfully get out of the time loop? And when they do, will they be together???
- 1994 Star Trek Generations I had forgotten how much I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this Star Trek movie. Both crews of the Enterprise get a little screen time. More time is given to the 'Next Generation' crew than the Original Series, but Kirk gets to have one last grand adventure....and DATA has so many great moments in this one.
- 1999 Galaxy Quest. I had to watch Galaxy Quest. It is one of the best Star Trek movies. The movie is a love letter to Star Trek fans. It is so incredibly funny YET full of heart. It is so well written and well acted. It is so quotable. It is just a perfectly perfect film.
2000s
- 2002 I Love Muppets (BBC Documentary) A BBC documentary with plenty of interviews with former guest stars AND the muppets themselves. Great fun.
2010s
- 2014 The Giver. I love, love, love the book. The movie is good. The more distance between you and the last reading of the book perhaps the more you'll enjoy it.
2020s
- 2023 Galaxy Quest: The Definitive History. A YT documentary on Galaxy Quest and how it came to be...the history of the filming, its impact on pop culture, and its legacy. INCREDIBLY packed with information.
