Shafer, Audrey. 2006. The Mailbox.
The Mailbox is an odd story of a young boy thrown about in the foster care program whose uncle and current guardian suddenly dies. The young boy in a state of shock does not know how to deal with his death. Doesn’t know how to cope. Doesn’t know what to do. How to respond. How to act. Who to call. So he does nothing. The next day he comes home from school to find the body gone and a note left in the mailbox. This unusual correspondence continues through much of the book until the authorities discover that this boy is living by himself with no adult supervision, guidance, or care. It is an odd story, but one that makes you think. Might pair well with Alabama Moon.
