Weekly Geeks 2009-22 Catching Up On Reviews

This week's topic:

1. In your blog, list any books you’ve read but haven’t reviewed yet. If you’re all caught up on reviews, maybe you could try this with whatever book(s) you hope to finish this week. (Be sure to leave a link to this post either in the comments of this post, or in the Mister Linky below.)

2. Ask your readers to ask you questions about any of the books they want. In your comments, not in their blogs. (Most likely, people who will ask you questions will be people who have read one of the books or know something about it because they want to read it.)

3. Later, take whichever questions you like from your comments and use them in a post about each book. Link to each blogger next to that blogger’s question(s).

4. Visit other Weekly Geeks and ask them some questions!

Books that I've finished and need to review:

  • A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot
  • Darkwood by M.E. Breen** (Once Upon A Time Challenge)
  • The City in the Lake by Rachel Neumeier** (Once Upon A Time Challenge)
  • A Tangled Web by L.M. Montgomery
  • Ghost Town by Richard W. Jennings
  • Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link
  • Margaret Mitchell & John Marsh: The Love Story Behind Gone With The Wind by Marianne Walker
  • Cleopatra's Daughter by Michelle Moran

Books that I hope to finish this week:

  • The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery
  • Chronicles of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery

  • Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
  • Nation by Terry Pratchett

Once Upon A Time Challene books I hope to finish in June:

Please take a few minutes and ask me some questions! I'm counting on you to help me out here :)

Grapes of Wrath! Please tell me about Grapes of Wrath?! It's on my personal 2008-2009 challenge and has been lying on the shelf for a while now, but I can't seem to get around to it because I have no idea anymore why I wanted to read it in the first place... And I'm way behind schedule for accomplishing my challenge :\

So pleace tell me why anyone should read this classic?

What did you think about the last lines of "Middlemarch"?

Which L M Montgomery did you like best? Why? Which book was the funniest? Which had the characters you cared most about? Which characters were they and why did you like/enjoy reading about them?

(I don't, as you know, have a blog - I hope that doesn't matter. :) L.

Oh, a few more thoughts. :)

The Margaret Mitchell book. Has it in any way changed your perception of "Gone with the Wind"? If it has, has it added to or detracted from your enjoyment in reading it? L.

Becky, like guatami tripathy, I'm interested in hearing about Cleopatra's Daughter (funny how an intriguing title can reel you in).

Please stop by and sign my new guestbook when you have a moment.

When you finish Tender Morsels I like to know what you think of it.

I'm interested in knowing how you liked The Grapes of Wrath. Do you feel it is his best or have you found something of his you liked more?I've been following your thoughts on Steinbeck's books as you read them. You've now read some that I haven't yet.
And I usually don't like 19th century women's fiction but I'm curious about Middlemarch. Did you enjoy it? I read one of her books once and was not impressed. Maryann was the title I think, something like that. It was just boring to me. Is Middlemarch worth my time or just another book about women and romance? I really dislike that theme in general. So many cite this book as a good classic. I'd like to know what YOU think.
And thank you so much for asking about A Mercy. My poor health has left me in such a fog I can't focus and this really helps.

The Blue Castle! My favorite L.M. Montgomery book! Why do you think it's lesser known than her other books? Great list you have here BTW - I'd be interested in the Margaret Mitchell book, is it worth putting in my TBR pile?

What are your thoughts on the ending of Nation by Terry Pratchett?

How much did Margaret Mitchell's real life inspire Gone With the Wind?

Cleopatra's Daughter does sound like an intersting title and will look forward to read your review? Could you include your thoughts on the descriptions of The Classical Roman world in the book (assuming the book is taking place in the time of Cleopatra and her daughter that is, otherwise I guess there is no reason to talk about that, LOL)

What did/do you think of the other-ness of Marr's fae? (Otherwise phrased as 'are they fey enough for you to be realistic?)

I loved loved loved Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link. Did you have a favorite story in the book? Although the target of the book was young adult, did you feel that most adults could enjoy the book as well?

I'm curious about Cleopatra's Daughter, too. From the descriptions of the book that I can find, it looks like it might be a straight-up historical drama. Is that the case? Or does it lean towards romance? Court intrigue?

I'd like to know more about Darkwood and A Bride in the Bargain. I plan on reading Darkwood this week and writing the review next week sometime.

I have read several reviews on A Bride in the Bargain and it sounds great. It's also on my TBR list but I don't have a copy of it. What's your favorite part of that book?

I am also reading Nation for Dewey's challenge. A Tangled Web is on my to be read pile. My post is here.

The City in the Lake sounds intriguing. Can you tell us briefly what it was about and did you enjoy it? How did it compare to Darkwood, your other Once Upon a Time challenge book?

Middlemarch is quite a whopper. Is it worth the time and energy? What kinds of readers would be most likely to enjoy it?

I loved Middlemarch when I read it, especially the little interjections made my the author to the reader. Do you enjoy that device in novels as well? Or does it snap you out of the narrative?

What's Ghost Town about? Does it have real ghosts in it?

Finally, I know you read a lot of YA fiction. I adored Wicked Lovely, and I was wondering if you could think of any other YA books that were just as awesome. (They don't have to be about exactly the same thing, of course.)

I read A Tangled Web a long time ago and my mother read it just after I finished it. We both found it very confusing, especially since we had enjoyed the Anne books, which seemed relatively simpler, and this one had so many, um, tangling details.

Did you enjoy it? Did you find the many characters and relationships confusing? If you've read the Anne books, how does it compare?

Grapes of Wrath was my very first Steinbeck novel, and I had to read it for school. I loved it, but it's not one of my favorites of his (East of Eden and Cannery Row are). How do you think this stacks up and does it deserve its place in the cannon as his (probably) best known novel?

Did "The Love Story Behind Gone With The Wind" make you think differently about the original book? Do you think you need to have read the original to enjoy this book?

Is Middlemarch the first book by Elliot that you have read? How were the female characters in the book portrayed?
