By 1899, we had learned to tame the darkness but not the Texas heat.
Most people like to talk in their own language.

September Accomplishments
These are a few of my favorite 'first' lines read in September of 2009:
Not every thirteen-year-old girl is accused of murder, brought to trial, and found guilty. But I was such a girl, and my story is worth relating even if it did happen years ago.

I'm not the hero of this story.
'The best thing about the seaside,' said the albino pirate, 'is putting seaweed on your head and pretending you're a lady.'
I have received a proposal of marriage.

May Accomplishments
These are a few of my favorite 'first' lines read in May of 2009.
The end of the world started when a pegasus landed on the hood of my car. Up until then, I was having a great afternoon.
So, there I was, tied to an altar made from outdated encyclopedias, about to get sacrificed to the dark powers by a cult of Evil Librarians.
Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically.
I have a secret. And everyone knows it.
In the spring, there are vampires in the wind.

March Accomplishments
These are a few of my favorite 'first' lines read in March of 2009.
Once upon a time, I thought that the cheerleaders at my high school were no more capable of intelligent thought or true athleticism than the average dachshund. Suffice to say that unless the wiener dogs of the world have been holing out on me--big time--I was very, very wrong.
Not to brag or anything, but if you saw me from behind, you'd probably think I was perfect.
"Marcelo, are you ready?" I lift up my thumb. It means I'm ready.
"If I was going to kill the Prophet," I say, not even keeping my voice low, "I'd do it in Africa."
"The fairies flew suspended on wires despite their tendency to get tangled together."
